An Australian university is preparing to study the1971 genocide in Bangladesh, marking the first time a reputed foreign university is introducing the subject to its curriculum, say the course organisers.
Sydney's Newcastle University School of Law will hold a seminar on 'Bangladesh Genocide '71' on Thursday, ahead of including the subject on its international law course this year.
Course coordinator and one of the main organisers of the seminar, Amy Maguire said the genocide perpetrated by Pakistani forces during Bangladesh's war of independence was being added to a course which researches genocide in different countries.
She said they were including the subject from this year and were willing to do extensive research on the issue.
Newcastle University senior lecturer Dr Abul Hasnat Milton will present the keynote paper in Thursday's seminar.
Milton is also central convener of Sydney-based organisation Justice for Bangladesh Genocide 1971.
