| Pro-AL students have laid siege to the home of the Chittagong University vice chancellor, demanding his resignation and blaming him for failure to act after alleged violence by pro-Jamaat Shibir activists.
The BCL activists have given the vice chancellor just 48 hours to leave office.
"The house of the VC is surrounded, he is unable to come out," said Md Alamgir Hossain, officer in charge of Hathazari thana, at 2pm.
He said six platoons of armed police had been deployed on the campus.
Senior CU teachers began a meeting with the VC at 2pm to find a solution to the crisis that brought the institution to a standstill.
"All offices on the campus have been closed and all vehicle movement of the university suspended," the OC said.
Witnesses say tensions mounted after members of Islami Chhatra Shibir expelled members of BCL from Hassan Cottage on the campus, a traditional stronghold of the pro-Jamaat activists.
"We are trying our best to bring the situation under control," said Mohammad Monjur Morshed, a university enforcement official.
BCL students defended their action, saying they had failed to get the administration to act after being attacked by the rivals.
"We wanted a peaceful solution to this but the administration did not respond to our call," Chhatra League general secretary Md Ershad Hossain told us . "Instead, they put locks on all offices on the campus."
"We have given a 48-hour ultimatum for the VC's resignation," said Hossain. | |
