Foreign affairs adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury arrived in Kuwait on a two-day visit Wednesday, to discuss a number of bilateral issues including the Bangladeshi workers' problems there and economic cooperation.
The adviser told us by phone from the Kuwaiti capital that he was scheduled to meet the Kuwaiti prime minister or deputy prime minister at 3pm BdST.
Iftekhar had told us the day before his departure: "I will meet Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Sabah Al- Salem Al Sabah, deputy prime minister Sheikh Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah and other senior officials of the ministries of labour and interior."
"Among the issues of discussion will be those pertaining to Bangladeshi workers in Kuwait and also broad economic and political cooperation between Bangladesh and Kuwait."
The adviser said he would also meet Bangladeshi workers in Kuwait and urge them to abide by the law of the land.
Thousands of foreign workers including Bangladeshis took to the streets in July demanding pay hikes and better working conditions.
According to government figures, the Kuwaiti government deported some 1,250 Bangladeshi workers for the demonstration.
