The National Children Day will be observed today in celebration of the 89th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Born in 1920 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Bangabandhu is revered as the greatest Bangalee who struggled all his life to establish people's rights.
The government, different political parties and socio-cultural organisations including ruling Awami League (AL) and its front organisations have taken up various programmes to mark the day with due respect.
Leaders, workers and supporters of AL and different socio-cultural organisations will place wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Mujib at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on road no-32 in the city's Dhanmondi and also at Bangabandhu's mazar at Tungipara.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasions of the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu and the National Children Day.
The president in his message paid deep tribute to the memory of the Father of the Nation and conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the children of Bangladesh.
“Responding to the clarion call of the undisputed leader of Bangalees, Bangabandhu, the countrymen participated in the war of liberation and earned the long-cherished independence,” he said.
Paying tribute to the Father of the Nation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her message called upon all to come forward and build a prosperous Bangladesh by making it a safe place for children as aspired by Bangabandhu.
“The intellect and the sacrifice of Bangabandhu will build up confidence among our children and juveniles, and give them inspiration to become great human beings,” she said, adding that Bangabandhu inspired the nation to attain the independence with his political wisdom and farsightedness.
The day's programme will begin with Hasina placing wreathes at the portrait of Bangabandhu at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at 7:30am and hoisting the national and party flags at AL offices across the country.
After that Hasina will address a discussion meeting at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre at 3pm.
Bangladesh Television (BTV) will broadcast a new monthly children's programme 'Amader Kotha' at 8:30 pm today to mark the day. In the 45-minute programme country's top policymakers will be present where children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds will take part.
The PM is scheduled to be the first key person in the talk with the children in today's programme.
Meanwhile, the Postal Department yesterday issued a commemorative stamp of Tk 10 denomination and an inaugural day envelop of Tk 6 denomination on the occasions of the birthday of the Father of the Nation and the National Children Day.
