|  AAMS Arefin Siddique, a professor of journalism, Thursday became the new Dhaka University vice chancellor, succeeding professor S M A Faiz.
"The president approved the appointment of Prof Arefin Siddique this afternoon," secretary to the president Md Sirajul Islam told us. The president is also the chancellor of the university.
Faiz, who took over as DU VC in Sept 2002 during the BNP-led coalition government's rule, handed in his resignation letter last Sunday telling reporters he sought "to be relieved".
Faiz made his announcement shortly after the pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal accused the VC of "doing nothing" against "ongoing campus violence".
A former president of the Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA), Siddique is a prominent leader of the pro-Awami League grouping of teachers.
Faiz, also a former chairman of Public Service Commission, was a member of the pro-BNP White panel of teachers. | |
