The Election Commission has cancelled the nomination of retired air vice marshal AK Khandaker, the Awami League nominee for Pabna-2 constituency and Sector Commanders Forum convener, on the ground of defaults on bank loan payments.
Khandaker's lawyer Shahjahan Mondol said they would appeal against the verdict.
Returning officer and Pabna deputy commissioner Khandaker Md Moklesur Rahman ordered the cancellation of the nomination of the deputy chief of the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan on Thursday, the last day of scrutiny of nomination.
The ruling said Khandaker had taken loan from IFIC Bank's Motijheel branch as a chairman of private airline Air Parabat and defaulted on payment of of Tk 14 crore in credit.
The bank had filed a case against him, it said.
The returning officer declared the nomination of BNP candidate AKM Selim Reza Habib and LDP joint secretary general Ismat Zerin for the Sujanagar-Bera seat valid.
