| The general election will be deferred, the chief election commissioner said Saturday after talks with Awami League and its allies.
The new polling date is likely to fall between Dec 27 and 29, ATM Shamsul Huda said adding that the new schedule would be announced Sunday.
The CEC said that the election was being rescheduled to guarantee an all-inclusive polls.
In line with deferment of the Jatiya Sangsad polls, Upazila Parishad elections would also be pushed back, Huda said.
"We also talked about the state of emergency and the government will look into it," the CEC added.
"The new dates will be announced on Sunday, and the time to submit nomination papers is also likely to be extended."
"As many of the AL-led alliance leaders were not in Dhaka today, they will be informed of our talks today, and then the schedule will be declared," Huda said.
According to the latest schedule, Sunday is the last date for submission of nomination papers.
The original election schedule was announced in Nov 2, but amended twice on Nov 9 and on Nov 19 keeping the election dates—JS polls on Dec 18 and UZ polls on Dec 28—the same.
After intense negotiations in the face of BNP's demand to push back the election date last week, the CEC said they were ready to reschedule the national election if all parties agreed.
The EC concluded talks with BNP-led four-party alliance on Friday.
A six-member delegation of Awami League and alliance members began talks with the Election Commission earlier Saturday, on the revised election schedule.
The AL-led delegation comprised acting secretary and spokesman Syed Ashraful Islam, office secretary Abdul Mannan and election affairs committee chairman HT Imam, Jatiya Party presidium member Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, JSD general secretary Syed Zafar Sajjad and Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua.
The EC was represented by the chief election commissioner, commissioners Mohamead Sohul Hossain and M Sakhawat Hossain and EC secretary Humayun Kabir.
The AL delegation had earlier met with AL president Sheikh Hasina's Sudha Sadan home, returning there from the EC Secretariat for further talks. | |
