UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon arrived in Bangladesh Saturday, on a two-day official visit.
He landed in Dhaka shortly before 6pm, flying in from the Indian capital after concluding a two-day tour of the neighbouring country.
Ban, the fourth UN chief to visit Bangladesh, will meet the leaders of the BNP and the Awami League Sunday to discuss the country's return to democracy through the Dec 18 general elections.
He is also scheduled to meet president Iajuddin Ahmed, chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury.
According to his itinerary, Ban will meet the foreign adviser on Saturday evening and attend a dinner hosted by the chief adviser in his honour.
On Sunday, he will place a floral wreath at the National Memorial at Savar in the morning and fly to Sirajganj and Bogra to see a UNDP project and a Grameen Bank programme respectively.
The secretary-general is scheduled to meet Iajuddin, Fakhruddin and the AL and BNP leaders in the afternoon.
Ban, a Korean national, will also attend a dinner at the residence of Korean ambassador in Dhaka during his stay.
He will leave Bangladesh on Sunday night, for the UN headquarters in New York, after holding a press conference at the Sonargaon Hotel at 6pm.
Previous UN heads that have visited the country were Kurt Waldheim, Javier Perez de Cuellar and Kofi Annan.
