Subject: Nation remembers martyred intellectuals................... Sun Dec 14, 2008 2:43 pm
The nation is commemorating its martyred intellectuals on Sunday with programmes in remembrance of the prominent academics, writers, journalists and doctors among those killed by Pakistani forces at the fag end of the independence struggle.
The Pakistan army along with its Bengalee collaborators killed the bright people of different professions this day in 1971, as it was sure of its defeat in the war, to render the nation intellectually bankrupt.
The state observes the day as Martyred Intellectuals Day.
Different political, cultural and social organisations observe the day by paying tributes at the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at Mirpur and holding discussions.
President Iajuddin Ahmed and chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed offered wreathes at the graveyard in the morning.
Common people paid their respect to the martyred intellectuals after them.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, before heading for Khulna, went there to pay tribute. Awami League president Sheikh Hasina could not go there as she was ill.
Many people also went to Rayerbazar killing field to pay their respects. Many intellectuals were led away from home, shot dead and then left at Rayerbazar.
