|  Sheikh Rehana arrived in the capital early Saturday morning, as the election campaign of her elder sister, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, gears up.
A British Airways flight carrying Rehana and her two daughters touched down at Zia International Airport at 3am, Hasina's information secretary Abul Kalam Azad told us.
Rehana, who has been living in London for the last 10 years, landed in Dhaka just hours after her sister unveiled AL's 23-point election manifesto on Friday morning.
The two sisters are the only surviving children of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was assassinated with other members of his family in a military putsch on Aug. 15, 1975.
Rehana, Hasina and their cousin, former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, have been jointly accused by the Anticorruption Commission of taking Tk 3 crore in bribes from a businessmen when Hasina was in power.
The businessman has said he filed the case only against Selim, while Hasina and Rehana were implicated it later by the investigating officer of the case.
A Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court indicted Rehana as a fugitive in the case.
Later the High Court halted the trial proceedings on a writ petition filed by the AL president challenging the legality of the case. The final verdict in the case is still pending in the HC.
Hasina's son Sajib Wazed Joy may arrive in Dhaka on Dec 16 to assist his mother in her election campaign, party leaders say. | |
